近松門左衛門作の浄瑠璃、「鑓の権三重帷子（やりのごんざかさねかたびら）」の登場人物おさいを描いた一枚。おさいは槍の名手の権三（ごんざ）との不義密通の濡れ衣を着せられ、やがて夫に斬られてしまう。この作品でおさいが手にしているのは権三の帯で、不義密通の証とされてしまったものだ。
清方は年方の門下で、十代にしてすでにプロの挿絵画家として活躍していた。青年期に泉鏡花と知り合い、その挿絵を描いたことや、幼少時の環境の影響もあり、終生江戸情緒及び浮世絵の美とは離れることがなかった。
肉筆作品にも力を注ぎ、日本を代表する美人画家のひとりに数えられる。

This print depicts Osai, a character in the joruri play "Yari no Gonza Kasane Katabira" by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Osai was falsely accused of adultery with Gonza, a master spearman, and was eventually executed by her husband. In this work, Osai is holding Gonza's obi (Kimono belt), which was considered a proof of adultery.
Kiyokata was a pupil of Toshikata and was already active as a professional illustrator in his teens. He became acquainted with Izumi Kyoka in his youth, and throughout his life, he continued to work with Edo sentiment and the beauty of Ukiyo-e.
