谷中安規は、奈良県出身の版画家・挿絵画家である。影絵を思わせる幻想的なタッチが特徴的で、ほぼ独学で築き上げたユニークな世界が力強く紙に刷り取られている。谷中の作品には踊る人々がよく登場するが、谷中自身も踊ることが好きであったというエピソードも残り、人物の躍動感はそのリアルな身体感覚、記憶のもと紡がれていったのであろうと想像したくなる。
空襲が激しさを増したころ、谷中は消息を絶つ。その後、版画誌「白と黒」にて装丁を手がけるなどして交流があった小説家・内田百閒が自身の安否を気遣っている事を新聞で知り、訪ねて安心させるも、戦後の食糧難もあったのか、その7ヶ月後に一人ひっそりと餓死した。享年49であった。

Taninaka Yasunori (1897-1946) was a printmaker and illustrator from Nara Prefecture. Characterized by a fantastical touch reminiscent of shadow play, his unique world, largely self-built, is boldly imprinted on paper. While Taninaka's works often feature dancing figures, anecdotes suggest his own fondness for dancing, imbuing his characters with a sense of dynamism rooted in real bodily sensations and memories.
When air raids intensified, Taninaka vanished. Uchida Hyakken, a novelist who had collaborated with Taninaka on the design of the print magazine "White and Black," was concerned about Taninaka's safety. Taninaka learned of this concern through the newspapers and visited Uchida to reassure him. However, whether due to post-war food shortages or other reasons, Taninaka quietly starved to death seven months later. He was 49 years old at the time of his passing.
