ロシアのサンクトペテルブルクに属するレニングラード州は、運河が町並みを巡ることから北のヴェネツィアの異名も持つ。厳しい寒さなのであろう、川沿いを歩く人物は肩を窄め早足だ。
小野忠重は昭和７年に新版画集団を設立し、労働者や民衆の生活を題材にした作品を制作する。その後は木版陰刻などの手法により独自のマチエールを持った作風を確立していった。版画史や古地図、浮世絵の研究者でもある。

Leningrad, which belongs to St. Petersburg, Russia, is also known as the Venice of the North because of the canals that run through the city. A person walking along the river is walking fast with their shoulders narrowed, probably because of the severe cold.
ONO Tadashige founded the Shinhanga-artists group in 1932 and made prints depicting workers and the everyday life of the general citizen.
After that, he studied woodblock printing techniques without sticking to the small frame and developed his own style.
He also studied the history of the printmaking, old maps, and Ukiyo-e.
