Hamana-Ko Lake, located along the coast, lost its boundary between the sea and the lake due to an earthquake in Meio 6 (1497), becoming open to the sea. The stakes depicted in the foreground are coastal protection installed during the Genroku era to protect against earthquakes accompanied by tsunamis. The group of pine trees on the right slope together with these stakes reflect the characteristics of this area.
The subtle depiction of Mount Fuji subtly highlighted in white in a place that might not be immediately noticed is quite elegant.

The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido is the most representative series of Hiroshige's works, published by Hoei-do.
At the time, Hoei-do was still a new publisher, actively adopting new expressions and full of energy. Perhaps inspired by this, Hiroshige also worked enthusiastically on the series and created rich works based on his experiences.

Hiroshige was born in 1776, the son of Ando Genemon, a fireman on the Yashirosu river bank in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. At first, Hiroshige painted beauties and portraits of actors. He became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" series.
