六十余州名所図会は、広重が晩年に精力的に挑戦した縦構図による作品です。縦構図は左右の広がりに乏しく、風景の雄大さを表現するのに適しているとはいえません。そのため広重は事物を左右にジグザグに配置して、視線の往復を促す構図や、手前の事物を極端に大きく描き、遠景を小さく描くという大小による遠近の表現に挑戦することで、画面の中に奥へと広がる空間をつくり出すことに成功しました。

“Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces” is a series of works with a vertical composition, a format Hiroshige vigorously explored in his later years. While vertical compositions are generally considered unsuitable for conveying the grandeur of landscapes due to their limited horizontal scope, Hiroshige masterfully overcame this by creating a sense of depth. He arranged elements in a zigzag pattern, guiding the viewer's eye back and forth across the picture. Additionally, he employed exaggeratedly large objects in the foreground and smaller ones in the distance to enhance the sense of perspective.
