国貞は豊国の門下で浮世絵師随一とも言われる数万点の作品を残し、国芳や広重を押さえて当時人気No.1を誇った浮世絵師である。22歳で浮世絵界にデビューしてから79歳で亡くなるまで、歌舞伎や吉原、当時の文化風俗など、まさに「江戸文化の全て」を描き切り、浮世絵界のトップランナーとして走り続けた大御所中の大御所といえる。
天保15年には豊国三代を襲名した。

This piece depicts an intense sumo match between Shiranui Dakuemon (Nagiemon) and Koyanagi Tsunekichi, full of power and excitement.
Kunisada, a student of Toyokuni, was one of the leading Ukiyo-e artists of his time, leaving behind tens of thousands of works. He was the most popular artist of his era, surpassing even Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige. From his debut in the Ukiyo-e world at the age of 22 until his death at 79, he portrayed the essence of Edo culture, depicting kabuki, Yoshiwara, and the customs and lifestyles of the time. He truly captured "all of Edo culture," maintaining his position as the top figure in the Ukiyo-e world throughout his career.
In the 15th year of the Tenpo era, he succeeded to the name Toyokuni III.
