「魁題百撰相」の題名は「海内百戦争」の語呂合わせになっており、芳年が百人の相貌を選んで題すという意味を表している。古今の英雄たちの名を借りているが、実際は見立絵で彰義隊の壮絶な戦いを描いている。
芳年はこの作品を描くために弁当を腰に裸で上野の山を走り回ったといわれている。死相を浮かべた瞳に白点を入れる表現や、大胆な短縮法を用いた迫真的な描写は見る者を圧倒する。
哀惜と悔恨の念がにじむ武士たちの表情には、江戸という一つの時代の死と、彼ら自身の死とが二重写しにされているかのようである。

The title "Kaidai-hyakusenso" means that Yoshitoshi selected one hundred portraits for the title.
Although the title borrows the names of ancient heroes, it depicts the fierce battles fought by the Shogitai military.
It is said that Yoshitoshi ran around the war-torn Ueno area to sketch the dead for these works.
The expression of the white dots in the eyes with a death look and the bold foreshortening technique in this impressive depiction overwhelm the viewer.
The faces of the warriors, with their sorrow and grudges, seem to show a double reflection of the end of the Edo period and their deaths.
