Kunitoshi was a pupil of Toyokuni III and later of Kunisada II after the death of Toyokuni III. From the 17th year of Meiji, he also used his other name Kunitoshi (邦年). His active period as an artist spanned from the Keio era to around Meiji 29 (approximately 1865 to 1896). From around Meiji 7 (1874), he produced famous place prints of Ginza, scenes of railway carriages, Mitsui Bank, and others, as well as modernization prints, Kirikumi-e, genre paintings, and even copperplate maps.
