「梨園の華」は、当時の人気役者たちを12作の連作で描いたシリーズ。
本作は1920年12月に有楽座で上演された翻訳劇、「レ・ミゼラブル」に取材した作品である。ジャン・バルジャンの鋭い眼差しにはこの世の不条理を呪う苦しみが宿る。
山村耕花は明治時代から昭和時代にかけて活躍した日本画家、浮世絵師、版画家である。
はじめ月耕に師事し、後に東京美術学校の日本画科を卒業した。
主に歴史風俗をモチーフにした作品を残しているが、役者絵の分野でも名を馳せている。

"Stars of Kabuki (Rien no Sono)" is a series depicting popular kabuki actors of the time in twelve works. This particular work is based on the December 1920 production at the Yurakuza Theatre, which was a translated play of "Les Misérables." In this piece, Jean Valjean's piercing gaze embodies the anguish and curse against the injustices of the world.
Yamamura Koka was a Japanese painter, ukiyo-e artist, and printmaker who was active from the Meiji era to the Showa era. He initially studied under Gekko and later graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He is known for his works primarily depicting historical scenes and customs, but he also gained fame in the field of actor portraits.
