北寿は、北斎初期からの門人で寛政末期から文政頃に作画している。風景画を主として風俗画や狂歌本の挿絵、摺物、肉筆画も残している。「武江年表」の享和年間の記事に「北寿浮絵上手」と記されていることから、当時すでに相当の評価を得ていた絵師だったと思われる。北寿の風景画は北斎の洋風表現を受け継いだものといわれており、評価が高い。

Hokuju was one of Hokusai's early disciples, active from the late Kansei era to the Bunsei period. He specialized in landscape paintings but also produced genre scenes, illustrations for kyōka poetry books, surimono (privately commissioned prints), and hand-painted works.
An entry from the Kyōwa era in the Chronicles of Edo (Bukō Nenpyō) refers to him as “Hokuju, a master of uki-e (perspective prints),” suggesting that he had already gained considerable recognition as an artist at the time.
Hokuju's landscapes are highly regarded and are said to reflect Hokusai’s influence, particularly his incorporation of Western-style techniques.
