豊国三代は豊国の門人で、まず国貞と名乗り、天保15年には豊国二代を名乗った。（実際には既に豊重が豊国二代を襲名していたが、自分の方がふさわしいという意図なのか当時は二代を名乗ったのだという。現在は区別の為に豊国三代として扱われる。）
作画期が長く、その作品数は一万点以上に及ぶと考えられている。特に役者絵・美人画等の人物の描写に定評があり、その作品数や勢いからして江戸浮世絵界を風靡していたことが窺える。

Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni. He initially used the name Kunisada, and in 1844, he adopted the name Toyokuni II. (In reality, Toyoshige had already succeeded as Toyokuni II, but Kunisada also took the name at that time, perhaps to solidify his own position. To avoid confusion, Kunisada is now recognized as Toyokuni III.)
Toyokuni III had a long and prolific career, with some sources estimating that he produced over 10,000 works. He was best known for his portrayals of people, particularly actor portraits and bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). His works' sheer volume and widespread popularity suggest that he dominated the Edo ukiyo-e world.
