本作は風刺画と同様に、象徴的な要素を含み、見る者にその意味を読み解かせる工夫が凝らされている。絵師の腕の見せ所は、いかに社会や政治に関する情報を的確に庶民に読み解かせるかにあった。また、限られた情報から当時の世相を読み解いていた江戸の庶民の世情への関心も相当なものだったと窺える。
