明治維新の前後に制作された二枚続の作品である。この射的場の様子は西南戦争を暗示しており、政府軍と西郷隆盛率いる薩摩軍との戦いを描いている。特に、新政府軍側の人物が鉄砲を用いている点が特徴的である。
風刺画は象徴的な要素を含み、見る者にその意味を読み解かせる工夫が凝らされている。絵師の腕の見せ所は、いかに社会や政治に関する情報を的確に庶民に読み解かせるかにあった。また、限られた情報から当時の世相を読み解いていた江戸の庶民の政治的関心も相当なものだったと窺える。
