富士山を背景に七福神たちが描かれているこの作品では、暁斎の戯画的センスと筆の軽妙さが表れている。ただ神々を描くだけではなく、見ていて楽しく、にやりとさせられる表現が魅力的。
暁斎は天保8年に国芳に入門するも、天保11年には狩野派の絵師前村洞和に再入門。洞和は暁斎の画才を愛し、「画鬼」と呼んだという。安政5年に狩野派を離れて「惺々狂斎」と号し、浮世絵を描き始めると、戯画・風刺画で人気を博した。他に万延頃から周麿と称して浮世絵を描き始めている。

In this work, which depicts the Seven Lucky Gods with Mount Fuji in the background, Kyōsai's playful sense of caricature and light, skillful brushwork are on full display. Rather than simply portraying the deities, he brings them to life in a way that is fun to look at and sure to bring a smile to the viewer's face.
Kyosai entered the school of Kuniyoshi, however, he decided to become a pupil of Maemura Towa, one of the artists from the Kano school, later.
Towa loved Kyosai's talent and called him a "painting demon." In 1858, Kyosai left Kano school and named "Seisei Kyosai" himself and started drawing caricatures and gaining popularity.
From around 1860, he also used the name "Chikamaro."
