清方は年方の門下で、十代にしてすでにプロの挿絵画家として活躍していた。青年期に泉鏡花と知り合い、その挿絵を描いたことや、幼少時の環境の影響もあり、終生江戸情緒及び浮世絵の美とは離れることがなかった。
肉筆作品にも力を注ぎ、日本を代表する美人画家のひとりに数えられる。

Kiyokata was a disciple of Toshikata and had already established himself as a professional illustrator in his teenage years. In his youth, he became acquainted with Kyōka Izumi and illustrated his works. Combined with the influence of his childhood environment, this connection ensured that he remained deeply attached to Edo aesthetics and the beauty of ukiyo-e throughout his life.
He also devoted himself to hand-painted works and is regarded as one of Japan’s leading bijin-ga (beautiful women) painters.
