This work captures a woman standing quietly outside a wall in the rain. Despite its simple composition, the piece evokes emotion and invites the viewer’s imagination through its use of negative space and stillness.
Capelari studied painting in Austria before coming to Japan in the late Meiji period. In 1915 (Taishō 4), he met Shōzaburō Watanabe, who is believed to have encouraged him to create woodblock prints.
