山中古洞は芳年の門人で、人物画に長じており、明治33年頃からは、口絵の制作もするようになった。
大正から昭和にかけては新版画を制作。「湯上り」は、歌麿から続く伝統的な美人大首絵と西洋的な陰影法がうまく調和している。

Yamanaka Kodo was a pupil of Yoshitoshi, and excelled in portrait painting.
From around 1900, he began to produce Kuchi-e, and in the Taisho and Showa eras, he produced Shinhanga.
In this work "After a Bath," he successfully blended the traditional style of Bijin Okubi-e; a close-up portrait of a beautiful woman, which had been handed down from Utamaro, with the Western method of shading.
