篠田桃紅は、1913 年に中国・大連に生まれる。5 歳の時に墨と筆に触れ、以後独学で書を極める。
第二次世界大戦後は文字を解体し、墨で抽象を描き始める。
1956 年渡米し、ニューヨークを拠点に各地で個展を開催。58 年に帰国してからは、壁画や壁書、レリーフといった建築に関わる仕事や、増上寺大本堂の襖絵などの大作の一方で、リトグラフや装丁、題字、随筆を手掛けるなど、活動は多岐にわたった。
50 年代の激しい筆致はやがて叙情性をたたえ、80 年代から 90 年代にかけては、線はより洗練された間を構成していった。近年、面と線は寄り添い、朱はあくまで高貴に、墨は静かに鋭く、あるいは控えめに層をなしている。
2005 年、ニューズウィーク（日本版）の「世界が尊敬する日本人 100 人」に選ばれるなど、その筆勢は留まることがない。

SHINODA Toko was born in Dalian, China, in 1913. She first encountered ink and brush at the age of five and began teaching herself calligraphy.
After World War II, she started deconstructing characters and creating abstract artworks. In 1956, she moved to New York, where she held several solo exhibitions.
Upon returning to Japan in 1958, she expanded her artistic practice to include wall paintings, calligraphic murals, and reliefs integrated into architectural works. She also produced masterpieces for fusuma at Zojo-ji Temple, book designs, and writings, among other works.
Her bold strokes of the 1950s gradually embraced lyricism, and by the 1980s and 1990s, her lines, compositions, and use of space became even more refined.
In 2005, she was selected as one of the "100 Japanese the World Respects" by Newsweek Japan, further demonstrating the enduring power of her brushwork.
