英山は父に次いで鈴木南嶺に絵を学んだ。更に幼馴染だった北渓を通して、北斎派の画風も習得している。
歌麿の急死後に新進の英山が現れ、美人画で売り出す。英山の作風は物柔らかく、どこか儚く弱い女性の美しさが漂う英山独自の美人画を確立して、新しい時代の美人画をリードしていった。
文化中期から文政中期に美人画の揃物を多く制作、2枚続の掛物絵に全身美人を描くスタイルを広めた。

Eizan first studied painting under his father, and later under Suzuki Nanrei. Through his childhood friend Hokkei, he also absorbed the style of the Hokusai school.
After the sudden death of Utamaro, the emerging artist Eizan gained prominence, particularly in the genre of bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women. He established his own distinctive style of depicting women with a gentle and somewhat fragile beauty, leading the development of a new era of bijin-ga.
From the mid-Bunka to mid-Bunsei periods (around 1807–1827), he produced many bijin-ga series and helped popularize the format of two-panel hanging scroll-style prints featuring full-length portraits of women.
