東海道五十三次の宿場を題材に描かれたシリーズの一作。現在の静岡県静岡市清水区にあたる由井宿を舞台に、雄大な富士山を背景に力強く漁をする女性の姿が描かれている。国芳ならではの生き生きとした筆致が、当時の風俗や逞しい人々の姿を鮮やかに伝えている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

This work is one from Kuniyoshi’s series depicting the post stations along the Tōkaidō. Set in Yui-juku, which corresponds to present-day Shimizu Ward in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, it portrays a woman vigorously fishing with the majestic Mt. Fuji rising in the background. Kuniyoshi’s lively brushwork vividly conveys the customs of the Edo period and the robust spirit of its people.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", it created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
