加賀見山旧錦絵という歌舞伎・浄瑠璃の中の、鳥井又助が大領を暗殺する場面を描いた作品。青白い生首、降りしきる雨、そして濁流にのみこまれる笠。国芳特有の劇的な構図と筆致が、観る者を物語の世界へと引き込む。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

This work depicts a scene from the kabuki and jōruri play The Old Nishiki-e of Mount Kagami, in which Torii Matasuke assassinates a nobleman of high rank.The pale severed head, the pouring rain, and the hat swept away by the muddy current are all rendered with Kuniyoshi’s distinctive dramatic composition and expressive brushwork, drawing the viewer into the depths of the story’s world.'
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", it created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
