Shoun joined Toyo-do as a member of its painting department, and soon began contributing lithograph illustrations to Fuzoku Gaho under the name “Yamamoto Shokoku,” appearing in nearly every issue. While he was active in the publishing world through this work, he also frequently exhibited as a Japanese-style painter. Among his representative works is the Imasugata (Ladies in Modern Style) series of beauty prints, published by Daikokuya Heikichi between 1906 and 1909. Executed with the finest carving and printing techniques, Imasugata was an ambitious work that presented a new individuality distinct from the Utagawa school.
