大黒天の福引に群がるのは、大勢のネズミたち。左手には、寿老人たちがネズミと猫を滑稽に演じている様子も見られる。七福神が衆生に福をふるまう場面をユーモラスに表した絵とも考えられ、お正月などのおめでたい時に飾るために作られたのかもしれない。
暁斎は天保8年に国芳に入門するも、天保11年には狩野派の絵師前村洞和に再入門。洞和は暁斎の画才を愛し、「画鬼」と呼んだという。安政5年に狩野派を離れて「惺々狂斎」と号し、浮世絵を描き始めると、戯画・風刺画で人気を博した。他に万延頃から周麿と称して浮世絵を描き始めている。

A crowd of mice gathers to draw fortunes from Daikokuten. To the left, Jurojin and others can be seen humorously performing as mice and cats. The scene may be interpreted as a playful depiction of the Seven Lucky Gods bestowing blessings upon people, and it may have been created to be displayed during festive occasions such as the New Year.
Kyosai entered the school of Kuniyoshi, however, he decided to become a pupil of Maemura Towa, one of the artists from the Kano school, later.
Towa loved Kyosai's talent and called him a "painting demon." In 1858, Kyosai left Kano school and named "Seisei Kyosai" himself and started drawing caricatures and gaining popularity.
From around 1860, he also used the name "Chikamaro."
