清方は年方の門下で、十代にしてすでにプロの挿絵画家として活躍していた。青年期に泉鏡花と知り合い、その挿絵を描いたことや、幼少時の環境の影響もあり、終生江戸情緒及び浮世絵の美とは離れることがなかった。
肉筆作品にも力を注ぎ、日本を代表する美人画家のひとりに数えられる。

This work is the frontispiece from the first part of an illustrated supplement originally produced for a book, and at the time of publication, it would have been affixed directly to the volume.
Kiyokata was a pupil of Toshikata and was already active as a professional illustrator in his teens. He became acquainted with Izumi Kyoka in his youth, and throughout his life, he continued to work with Edo sentiment and the beauty of Ukiyoe.
