While pursuing a serious career as a Nihonga painter, Natori Shunsen also gained recognition by illustrating newspaper novels by authors such as Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as designing frontispieces and book covers for literary works by writers like Ishikawa Takuboku.
He maintained a close connection with the theatrical world, creating actor portraits. From the Taisho period onward, he produced actor prints under the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, earning great acclaim.
