Kawase Hasui originally pursued a career as a painter of Japanese-style art, but in 1918 he was deeply impressed by Ito Shinsui’s woodblock print series Eight Views of Omi and decided to devote himself to printmaking. He went on to become a leading figure of the shin-hanga movement, producing over 600 works during a career that spanned about forty years.
Hasui’s distinctive use of blue, with its profound depth that seems to capture even the atmosphere itself, came to be celebrated as “Hasui Blue.” Shopping Guide & Information of the Japanese Prints
