静けさに満ちた掘割の夜桜を描いた一枚。対照的に奥には興行物の光が見える。賑わいから少し外れ、暗がりから見上げる桜は白さが際立ち、昼間とはまた違った魅力がある。
川瀬巴水は元々日本画家として活躍していたが、大正7年に発表された伊東深水の木版画作品「近江八景」に感銘を受け版画家に転向した。
その後は新版画の第一人者として活躍し、約40年にわたる画業のなかで多くの版画作品を残し、その数は600点にも及ぶ。
巴水の特徴的な青色はその場の空気さえも宿す深い味わいを持ち、「巴水ブルー」と称される。

This print depicts cherry blossoms at night along a quiet canal. In contrast, lights from entertainment stalls can be seen in the background. Slightly removed from the bustling crowd, the blossoms viewed from the shadows appear especially white, revealing a charm distinct from their daytime appearance.
Kawase Hasui originally pursued a career as a painter of Japanese-style art, but in 1918 he was deeply impressed by Ito Shinsui’s woodblock print series Eight Views of Omi and decided to devote himself to printmaking. He went on to become a leading figure of the shin-hanga movement, producing over 600 works during a career that spanned about forty years.
Hasui’s distinctive use of blue, with its profound depth that seems to capture even the atmosphere itself, came to be celebrated as “Hasui Blue.”
