伊東 深水が18歳（大正5年）の頃、清方塾生による郷土会展に「対鏡」を出品したところ、渡邊庄三郎の目にとまった。木版画にすれば必ず良い作品が制作できると確信した庄三郎は、新版画の制作を決意。以後、大正5年から昭和35年までの間に130点を超える深水の新版画が制作された。
その後も、日本画家としても文展に入選するなど早くから注目を集め、文展、帝展、新文展、戦後に入って日展を主な舞台として活躍し、日本を代表する美人画家として認められていった。

In 1916, when Ito Shinsui was 18 years old, he exhibited Woman Looking in a Mirror at the Kyodokai exhibition of Kiyokata’s pupils. The work caught the eye of Watanabe Shozaburo, who became convinced that it would make an excellent woodblock print. This led him to embark on the production of new prints by Shinsui, resulting in more than 130 works created between 1916 and 1960.
Shinsui continued to attract attention as a painter as well, being accepted into the Bunten exhibition at an early stage. He went on to be active in the Bunten, Teiten, and Shin-Bunten, and, after the war, the Nitten, ultimately establishing his reputation as one of Japan’s leading bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) artists.
