天竺徳兵衛は、江戸時代の講談や歌舞伎に登場する伝説的な冒険人物で、若くして天竺へ渡り、妖術や奇術を身につけて帰国したとされる英雄です。異国趣味あふれる波瀾万丈の物語と、怪異・妖術を操る派手な演出から、歌舞伎や浮世絵の題材として人気を博しました。

本作品は羽子板に模した作品となり、摺の早い作品のみに羽子板の柄の部分が付けられています。

Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni. He initially used the name Kunisada, and in 1844, he adopted the name Toyokuni II. (In reality, Toyoshige had already succeeded as Toyokuni II, but Kunisada also took the name at that time, perhaps to solidify his own position. To avoid confusion, Kunisada is now recognized as Toyokuni III.)

Toyokuni III had a long and prolific career, with some sources estimating that he produced over 10,000 works. He was best known for his portrayals of people, particularly actor portraits and bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). His works' sheer volume and widespread popularity suggest that he dominated the Edo ukiyo-e world.
