源義平は、難波経房に捕らえられた際、「貴様は俺ほどの者を斬るほどの男か。名誉なことだ、見事に斬れ。もし拙く斬れば、喰らいついてやるぞ。」と言い放った。これに対し経房が「首を斬られた者が、どうして喰らいつけるのか」と問うと、義平はこう応じた。「すぐに喰らいつくのではない。雷となって蹴り殺してやるのだ。さあ、斬れ。」 その8年後、経房が平清盛のお伴で摂津国・布引の滝を訪れた折、にわかに空は雲に覆われ雷が落ち、経房はその命を落としたと伝えられている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇の日々を過ごしたが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たす。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

This work depicts the legend of Minamoto no Yoshihira.
When Minamoto no Yoshihira was captured by Nanba Tsunefusa, he is said to have declared:
“Are you truly a man worthy of beheading one such as myself? It is an honor—do it well. If you do it poorly, I will come back to bite you.”
When Tsunefusa replied, “How can a man whose head has been cut off possibly bite?” Yoshihira answered:
“I will not strike at once. I will return as a thunderbolt and kill you. Now—cut me down.”
Eight years later, when Tsunefusa accompanied Taira no Kiyomori to view the Nunobiki Falls in Settsu Province, the sky suddenly darkened with clouds, and lightning struck. Just as Yoshihira had foretold, Tsunefusa is said to have lost his life.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer compared to Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", which created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi", and he became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinated composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
