清親（1847～1915）は、「明治の広重」とも呼ばれた、明治を代表する浮世絵師。他の絵師たちが即物的な描写に終始したのに対して、光と影のうつろいを情感豊かに描いた「光線画」と呼ばれる風景画を好んで描き、浮世絵界に新たな風を吹き込んだ。それにとどまることなく、まるで西洋画のような写実的な花鳥画や、ユーモアあふれる風刺に満ちたポンチ絵、さらには歴史画や美人画など、多岐に渡るジャンルを手掛けた。

Kiyochika was one of the most acclaimed artists of the Meiji period, dubbed as “Meiji’s HIroshige.” While other artists focused on literal depictions, Kiyochika took a more figurative approach, using light and shadow to create a moodier atmosphere, creating what we know today as Light Ray Paintings and sending a new wave throughout the Ukiyo-e world. He painted in multiple different genres and styles, from western realistic flowers and birds. humourous and biting satires, as well as historical events and beauty figures.
