清方は年方の門下で、十代にしてすでにプロの挿絵画家として活躍していた。青年期に泉鏡花と知り合い、その挿絵を描いたことや、幼少時の環境の影響もあり、終生江戸情緒及び浮世絵の美とは離れることがなかった。
肉筆作品にも力を注ぎ、日本を代表する美人画家のひとりに数えられる。

Kaburaki Kiyokata was a pupil of Mizuno Toshikata, and by his teenage years he was already active as a professional illustrator.
In his youth, he became acquainted with Izumi Kyōka and produced illustrations for his works. Influenced by this relationship and by his own childhood environment, Kiyokata remained deeply connected throughout his life to Edo sensibilities and the aesthetic ideals of ukiyo-e.
He also devoted himself to original paintings (nikuhitsu-ga) and is regarded as one of Japan’s foremost painters of bijin-ga.
