石巻乃暮雪は、数ある巴水の雪景色の中でも、その構図の妙と静寂の深さで高く評価されている名作です。
この作品は、雪がしんしんと降り積もる夕暮れ時の宮城県石巻の川べりを描いています。画面の手前には、雪を厚くかぶった家並みと、川面に静かに浮かぶ二艘の繋ぎ舟が配置されており、この「静」の構図が、見る者を一瞬にして北国の冬の静寂へと引き込みます。川の水面は、深い青緑色の中に黄色の光がわずかに混じり、周囲の雪の白さをより一層際立たせると同時に、水面の冷たさと、そこに映る微かな街の気配を感じさせます。
右奥には雪に覆われた山肌が複雑な斜面を見せ、さらに遠くにはぼかしによって表現された暗い遠山がそびえています。この遠近感の作り方が、単なる風景の記録を超えて、旅先でふと足を止めた時の孤独感や、冬の夜へと向かう街のしっとりとした情緒、いわゆる「雅趣」を醸し出しています。

Evening Snow at Ishinomaki is regarded as a masterpiece among Kawase Hasui’s many snow scenes, highly praised for the sophistication of its composition and the profound depth of its stillness.
The print depicts a riverside in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, at dusk, as snow falls steadily and accumulates in silence. In the foreground, rows of houses thickly blanketed in snow are arranged alongside two moored boats resting quietly on the river’s surface. This carefully constructed sense of “stillness” draws the viewer instantly into the hushed winter calm of northern Japan. The river itself is rendered in a deep blue-green tone, subtly infused with hints of yellow light, which both heighten the surrounding whiteness of the snow and convey the coldness of the water, along with the faint presence of the town reflected upon it.
In the right background, snow-covered mountain slopes form intricate contours, while farther beyond, dark distant mountains rise softly through the use of bokashi gradation. This treatment of spatial depth elevates the work beyond a mere record of scenery, evoking instead the solitude felt when one pauses unexpectedly during a journey, the quiet, moist atmosphere of a town slipping into a winter night, and an understated, refined poetic sensibility—what might be described as gashu.
