掲載作品は、近松門左衛門の没後200年にあたり刊行された『大近松全集』の木版画附録として制作された一連の作品の一つである。この版画は原画も現存し、2020年に福田美術館で開催された展覧会『美人のすべて』にて公開され話題を呼んだ。
上村松園（1875 - 1949）は、気品あふれる美人画を得意とした日本画家である。
明治の時代に女性が画家を志すという事は珍しく、世間の目は冷たかったが、その実力により女性として初の文化勲章を受章するに至った。松園の描く女性像は人物の内面に寄り添うような視線で描かれ、人物の生きる力があふれ出ているように感じられる。また、幼い頃に父を亡くした松園にとって、母・仲子は常に理解者であり、母を題材とした作品にはその追慕の念や尊敬の眼差しを思わせる。

This print is one of a series of works created as woodblock print appendix to the '大近松全集: published for the 200th anniversary of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s passing. The original drawings of these woodblock print still exist, and they garnered attention when exhibited at the Fukuda Art Museum in 2020 as part of the exhibition.
Uemura Shoen (1875 - 1949) was a Japanese painter known for her elegant portraits of beautiful women.
During the Meiji era, it was rare for women to aspire to be artists, and society's perception was often cold towards them. However, due to her talent, she became the first woman to receive the Order of Culture. Shoen depicted women with a gaze that seemed to embrace their inner selves, full of a sense of vitality.
Moreover, having lost her father at a young age, Shoen always found understanding in her mother, Nakako. Her works featuring mothers reflect feelings of respect towards her.
