Matsushima, one of the "3 most scenic spots in Japan", is placed in Miyagi prefecture. This is the scenery from Mt. Tomi-Yama.
Mt. Tomiyama was the popular scenic spot for viewing Matsushima in Edo-period.
The lithologic character of the islands in Matsushima is brittle and easy to be abraided. For that reason, this scenery is a little bit different from the current one.
"Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces" is a series by Hiroshige depicting famous places throughout Japan.
All of the works are vertically oriented, with innovative compositions such as a large foreground and emphasis on perspective.
