大胆で印象的な構図の中に、深水特有の透き通るような肌の質感と、水になびく黒髪の美しさが際立って描かれている。日常の所作を切り取ることで、気品と美しさが静かに香り立つ。

伊東 深水が18歳（大正5年）の頃、清方塾生による郷土会展に「対鏡」を出品したところ、渡邊庄三郎の目にとまった。木版画にすれば必ず良い作品が制作できると確信した庄三郎は、新版画の制作を決意。以後、大正5年から昭和35年までの間に130点を超える深水の新版画が制作された。
その後も、日本画家としても文展に入選するなど早くから注目を集め、文展、帝展、新文展、戦後に入って日展を主な舞台として活躍し、日本を代表する美人画家として認められていった。

Within the bold and striking composition, Shinsui’s hallmark rendering of translucent skin and the beauty of flowing black hair moving in the water are vividly emphasized.By capturing an everyday gesture, the work quietly evokes a sense of elegance and beauty.

In 1916, when Ito Shinsui was 18 years old, an exhibition of the pupils of Kiyokata was held. Shinsui exhibited "Woman Looking in a Mirror" at the exhibition, and it fascinated Watanabe Shozaburo. Then Watanabe decided to start making woodcut print works of Shinsui, and later, he produced over 130 printworks from 1916 to 1960.
